Informational Resource for Unna Boot Dressings
Unna Boot Dressings
Unna Boot is a moist gauze bandage (typically 3 inches or 4 inches wide and
10 yards long), which can be used for the treatment
of venous stasis ulcers and other venous insufficiencies of the leg. Unna Boot can be used as a supportive bandage for
sprains and strains of the foot, ankle and lower leg. The gauze is impregnated with a
thick, creamy mixture of zinc oxide
and calamine to promote healing. Unna Boot's
may also contain acacia, glycerin, castor oil and white petrolatum.
Unna boot promotes healing, increases blood return to the heart and reduces infection. Typical unna boot application is wrapped from the toes to just below the knee,
covering the ulcer and the lower leg. Unna boot then dries and hardens. Elastic bandage is often wrapped snugly over the Unna boot.
Unna boot creates a barrier preventing a patient with an ulcerated wound from being able to scratch it and cause possible infection. Zinc oxide in the unna boot treats the wound and allows it to heal.
